MAS Air Flow Sensor

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:44 pm

A week ago I put up a post about my "check engine light" coming on  in my
2000 Golf.
Turned out to be the MAS air flow sensor.  Is this a reasonable problem?
About what should it have cost to replace?  Does VW have a list that the
dealer go by for repairs?

I feel so helpless about these things.  I don’t know what a MAS sensor it,
let alone if it actually need to be replaced, was replaced, or charged
fairly.

TSB 179201 and '93 Passat GLX

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:43 pm

I have a 1993 Passat GLX and I’m sure I have oil blow past my rings.
I can see some smoke when I get the RPMs up there, like having to
really stomp on it getting on the highway.  I noticed that there is a
Technical Service Bulletin numbered 179201 dated Jaunuary 1992.  I
realize it is a year before my car but I was wondering if anyone had
that TSB or others relating to excessive oil consumption?  If so,
would you be able to email it to me.  I’ve been unable to find copies.

Thanks,

Mike

Smallest ]wheel size that will fit a Jetta IV

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:43 pm

I’m about to ditch my Jetta II for a new VR6 Jetta IV.  I have some
14" snow tires that I would like to use on my new car.  Will a 14" rim
fit over the caliper and rotor?  I have my doubts….  Thanks.

Complete Newbie Question…

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:42 pm

Hi Guys~

I hope someone might be able to clear something up for me? I was wondering
what a "Throttle Body" is, how it works, and how much one would cost for a
VW Polo MK3?

Thanks in advance,

Acquiesce.

1991 Jetta Engine Code

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:42 pm

I have a 1991 Jetta and I am wondering what the engine code is or how I can
find out.  Here are the details:

- bought in Canada
– 8 valve gas engine
– made in Wolfsberg (VIN starts with WVW . . .)

The reason I am asking is that I have located a couple of mass air flow
meters online, but in order to pick the right one I need to know whether my
engive code is "PF" or "RV".

Many thanks in advance.

Passat 97 bearings and climate control pump

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:42 pm

Hi all

Just had my drivers side bearings done and it cost £250, £30 part rest
was labour.  This is v. expensive and now the off side front bearing
is starting to go I was thinking of changing it myself, is it very
difficult? I can use a hydraulic press to get them out but am not sure
whether I’d need to sweat them out or press – any advice would be
welcome

2nd point is the noise from my climate control, which I think is the
pump as it doesn’t make the noise when it’s on econ mode, only on Auto
mode does it grind.  VW dealer gives me different answers whenever I
ask them – it’s the seals, it’s the pump, it’s got no gas etc.  I can
get the pump for £95 and want to do it myself but believe that I have
to decompress the gasses – is this true and is it an easy job to
replace?

Many thanks for listening to me whinge one but I appreciate any
assistance.

Cheers

Matt

Drive axle flange circlip fit

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:09 am

Hello,

I have an ’87 GTI 8V and am installing the Peloquin Pelolok
differential upgrade.  I used the included tool to compress the
flange, and I found that the new circlip wouldn’t go over the piece of
M10x1.5 all thread.  So I removed the tool, put the circlip over the
all thread and reinstalled the tool.

I used outer-serrated circlip opening pliers to expand the circlip.
After it flew off once, it cleared the all thread (which it wouldn’t
do before); so the circlip had taken a set larger than original.

I again tried to install the circlip, opening it just enough to clear
the output shaft.  I got it on, but it didn’t seem to seat well.  So I
removed it and compared it to the old one… the new one was stretched
larger than the old one.

So I tried refitting the old one, and I could see the wear groove
wasn’t in tight to the output shaft.  It had about 1mm radial play.
So I removed it and installed the second new circlip of the kit, again
trying to limit the stretch I put on the circlip.

The new circlip went on first time, and "snapped" well into place.  It
also has 1mm radial play.

The kit instructs the user not to install the dished washer, so the
circlip is bearing directly on the flange, not that has much to do
with the story…

What is the proper amount of radial play in these circlips when they
are correctly installed.  Is is possible that the circlips I got with
the kit were faulty?  How "springy" are they supposed to be?  Is there
maybe a heat treatment that may have been incorrect?

Thanks guys, I’m apart, waiting to get back together…

Ran on 94 octane (from 87) now surge of momentary power at start then stutter

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:09 am

Hey

1991 Golf GL 1.8L gasoline engine (100 Hp)

I filled up with some 94 Octane gas (because it was cheap… only 61.9 cents
per litre of 87 octane, 74.9 for 94octane…. regular gas was this much a
few months ago). Anyhow, I took it for a blast down the highway for an hour
and a bit…. seemed to get great gas mileage for a change. Anyhow now when
I go to start up in first gear the car wants to jump the gun a little…. it
will start to take off, but then will start to stutter because I am not
nearly giving it enough gas for what it wants to do (this is all still while
the clutch isn’t even all the way out)….. Should I have just kept putting
crude old 87 Ocane in it, as per usual…. I like treating the car to 94
Octane now and then to clean it out on the highway (its a city car… it
gets carbonized). This phenomenon only happens when I want to start off
quickly off the line, which I wanted to do twice, the other 2-3  starts
since I left the offramp were just normal acceleration attempts…. nothing
out of the usual.

BTW I could feel the 94 octane working nicely thru the system…. the car
actually felt like giving something very close to respectable performance
going from 130-150kph…. almost got it to 160, then realized as this is the
Canada day long weekend the cops would be out in more force…. slowed her
back down to the normal flow of traffic (120-135).

1987 GTi stereo installation

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:08 am

Previous owner removed factory stereo, and by the time I bought the car
had installed some ancient shafted type radio. In the process he/she had
cut off the factory harness and removed the mounting hardware. The
wiring does not worry me; that I can fix easily. What I am looking for
is some guidance on the mounting hardware, links to photos would be
great. Any information at all on how the factory radio was installed and
how after market units can be installed would be appreciated..

Above the stereo opening (normally hidden by the dash trim) I see two
screw holes, about 4 inches apart. They clearly have been used in the
past but nothing is mounted in them now. I am guessing that a bracket
was mounted here for the factory radio. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, for the 87 GTi Crutchfield distinguishes between pre and post Oct.
1986 manufacturing date and German / US manufacturing location. Does
anyone know what the differences would be?

The car is US made.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. In addition to posting in
this NG, I can also be reached at bhov…@yahoo.com
