My ’88 Scirocco 16v has developed a slight humming noise which seems
to be in the transmission. The periodic hum is only noticable when
the car in going 50-55 mph. This noise does not depend on whether the
car is in gear. For example, I can speed up to 60 mph and shift into
neutral. I will not hear the hum until I slow down to 55mph. The hum
will then stop after falling below 50mph. The trans fluid level is
good, but I don’t know which brand/type of fluid is being used. I
have not changed the fluid since buying the car neary two years ago.
Any advice is helpful.
Thanks,
Chad

I Don’t know what the problem is, however once you get it figured out,
refill the tranny fluid w/ "Redline MTL". It made a world of difference
in my 87 GTI 16V (much smoother).

P.S. I’ve never gotten a kick back from "Redline" either.

Hmmm. Kinda sounds like the wheel bearing’s might need to be replaced? I am
by far a mechanic but it seems like bad bearing’s can be a source of a humming
noise.
