1987 GTi stereo installation

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:08 am

Previous owner removed factory stereo, and by the time I bought the car
had installed some ancient shafted type radio. In the process he/she had
cut off the factory harness and removed the mounting hardware. The
wiring does not worry me; that I can fix easily. What I am looking for
is some guidance on the mounting hardware, links to photos would be
great. Any information at all on how the factory radio was installed and
how after market units can be installed would be appreciated..

Above the stereo opening (normally hidden by the dash trim) I see two
screw holes, about 4 inches apart. They clearly have been used in the
past but nothing is mounted in them now. I am guessing that a bracket
was mounted here for the factory radio. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, for the 87 GTi Crutchfield distinguishes between pre and post Oct.
1986 manufacturing date and German / US manufacturing location. Does
anyone know what the differences would be?

The car is US made.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. In addition to posting in
this NG, I can also be reached at bhov…@yahoo.com

On my 1991 GTI, the radio is like many aftermarket units in that a
rectangular sleeve fits in the dash, bend a few tabs to lock it in place,
and then the radio slides into it.  On the back of the radio was a screw-in
rubber thing that rested in a hole in a bracket in the back of the dash to
support the rear of the unit.
