2.0l 16V motor mounts worn?

I have a 92 GTI 16V with 110,000 kms on it.  I just bought it so I don’t
know how it has been driven in the past.  I am having trouble shifting
smoothly  at any rpms, partiularly high rpms.  This is my third GTI (84
Rabbit GTI, 87 GTI 8V) and the first one I have had any trouble shifting
smoothly in.  Normally, I pride myself on my smooth shifts.  I can rock
the engine noticable if I lean over the engine bay and pull on the intake
manifold with my right hand.  IS this normal?  Is there a known problem
with 16V engine mounts? Which one should I replace first? I know the
particulars of engine mounts on A1 cars, and never had a problem with my
87 GTI 8V (215,000 kms), So what gives with the 16V.  Help please.

Thanks,
James

I had difficulty shifting my car when the front motor mount was bad.
I could see it had too much play in it when I had the hood up, blipped
the throttle and watched how much movement there was.
