Fox Digifant trouble. Help!

My ’93 VW Fox has a problem that has me ready to sell the car.
But I’d much rather find the trouble and keep it.
This car has thas the Digifant II unit. Here’s the problem:

After driving he car for more than an hour (usually two but sometimes
less)  I start to get a bucking reaction from the engine.  It’s as if the
fuel is being cut off, then instantly back on.  Think of it as taking
your foot off the gas really fast, then putting it back on.  If I pull
over, or just hit the clutch, the engine will die.  As soon as I try to
restart, it starts up instantly, but will die again.  So I let it cool
down for a few minutes, and then it starts up, and it’s fine for another
hour or so.
At the suggestion of many of my VW peers, I replaced the transfer
pump in the fuel tank.  I was told the pump could get hot, sieze up and
cause the trouble I’ve encountered.  That didn’t solve the problem; it
still does it.
I also replaced many of the vacuum tubes and caps, as I thought I
could have a leak, but after thinking about it, I realized that that
probably isn’t the problem; the car runs too well most of the time.
The dealer tells me that I sould have the CO adjusted, but even
if it’s off, I don’t think it would cause such a problem, especially
being as intermittent as it is.
I’ve run out of ideas, and I’ve gotten really frustrated.  If
anyone could point me in the right direction, I would be forever endebted
to him/her.

My newsreader is all messed up–I can’t receive news.

                                                        Thanks a lot!

16V Hot Start Problem

Hoping somebody can identify this problem:

I recently purchased an 87 Scirocco with 1.8 16V engine.  The car runs
well, and starts immediately when cold, even at below zero temps.
However, it is very difficult to start, and sometimes even impossible,
after reaching operating temps.  Occasionally, it has to be left to cool
down for an hour or so, and then it starts okay.

I replaced the battery, but this made little difference.  The hotter the
engine, the harder it is to start.  A mechanic suggested the starter is to
blame, but I don’t understand if that is the problem why it starts no
problem in very cold temps.  When the engine is hot, the engine is very
sluggish to turn over when cranking.

Appreciate any suggestions,

Bruce

Re: Wet Seatbelts on 87' Golf

The seal on your drivers side door might be allowing water to run into the
car and into the seatbelt holder.  Is the carpet on that side of the car
wet at all after it rains?  Or the water might be coming in through the
sunroof and running along the ceiling and the side of the car down into the
holder, although you’d probably notice a wet seat if that were the case.

My Dasher was leaking fairly heavily for a few weeks (up to two inches
of standing water in the drivers side floor after a heavy rain. :P )  I finally
found the leak (which was the grommet where the hood release cable enters
the engine compartment) by having my brother spray water from a hose onto
various parts of the car while I stayed inside and looked for dripping water.
A similar arrangement might work to find out where your car is leaking.

Good luck,

Sorry, I should have mentioned it does not have power steering – its a
very strange problem.

Sorry (yet again!) – the car is a carburated 1300 model, and it does
hesitate under hard throttle like yours did. When you say bucking, do
you mean misfiring??

Many thanks,

Block Heater

Has anyone installed a block heater in 1989 Jetta? How difficult is it?  The
Bentley manual doesn’t cover such a mundane procedure.

16v transmission noise

My ’88 Scirocco 16v has developed a slight humming noise which seems
to be in the transmission.  The periodic hum is only noticable when
the car in going 50-55 mph.  This noise does not depend on whether the
car is in gear.  For example, I can speed up to 60 mph and shift into
neutral.  I will not hear the hum until I slow down to 55mph.  The hum
will then stop after falling below 50mph.  The trans fluid level is
good, but I don’t know which brand/type of fluid is being used.  I
have not changed the fluid since buying the car neary two years ago.
Any advice is helpful.

Thanks,
Chad

VR6 in a 85 Golf

I am in the middle of  transplanting the drive train from a 95
Jetta GLX into a 85 Golf. I would like to hear from anyone having
direct experience with this swap and how they dealt with some of
the problems involved. I am located in SoCA.

WANTED:Bra for Scirocco

I ran in to a stupid muther-f%@1!*&%!#@ wheele-barrel that fell off
a truck on my way to work, it glanced my rt front side, right above the turn
signal and bounced off, now i have a depressed corner and a few 2"
scratched on my hood. Instead of fixing/painting it, I’d like to get a bra.
Does anyone know, besides the dealership, where I can get a bra for my car?

oxygen sensor, gear shifting

I have 85 GTI and have some problems shifting gears when
the engine is running (parked or in motion). In order to
shift into any gear, I have to use excessive force. When the
engine is not running I don’t have that problem.

Will the engine run rich or lean when the oxygen sensor is
disconnected?

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
