My ’93 VW Fox has a problem that has me ready to sell the car.
But I’d much rather find the trouble and keep it.
This car has thas the Digifant II unit. Here’s the problem:
After driving he car for more than an hour (usually two but sometimes
less) I start to get a bucking reaction from the engine. It’s as if the
fuel is being cut off, then instantly back on. Think of it as taking
your foot off the gas really fast, then putting it back on. If I pull
over, or just hit the clutch, the engine will die. As soon as I try to
restart, it starts up instantly, but will die again. So I let it cool
down for a few minutes, and then it starts up, and it’s fine for another
hour or so.
At the suggestion of many of my VW peers, I replaced the transfer
pump in the fuel tank. I was told the pump could get hot, sieze up and
cause the trouble I’ve encountered. That didn’t solve the problem; it
still does it.
I also replaced many of the vacuum tubes and caps, as I thought I
could have a leak, but after thinking about it, I realized that that
probably isn’t the problem; the car runs too well most of the time.
The dealer tells me that I sould have the CO adjusted, but even
if it’s off, I don’t think it would cause such a problem, especially
being as intermittent as it is.
I’ve run out of ideas, and I’ve gotten really frustrated. If
anyone could point me in the right direction, I would be forever endebted
to him/her.
