What should the Spark Plug Gap be set to on a 1990 Jetta Carat?  Would anyone
recommend using anything except Bosch plugs?

thanks

Scirocco_S badges 4sale

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:27 am

Not long ago, I seem to recall someone here looking for those groovy red
Scirocco (’74-’81) badges. Well, you’re in luck because I recently
acquired an extra extra. (one spare lives in my collection in case some
creep gets greedy and swipes the one off my car).
Make me an offer, and let me know whether you require the red
"Volkswagen" text that matches the red "Scirocco_S (fuel injected)" badge.
While I’m ranting about badges, what’s up with the red "Rabbit_S (fuel
injected)" badge. I have only ever seen one, and it’s in my collection. It
came off a Westmoreland Rabbit ’80-’81 and says made in USA on the back.

'96 Jetta GLX Bose System

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:27 am

Does anyone know if the Bose 10-speaker system is in the 96 1/2 models of the
Jetta GLX?  I was at a dealer in March and he said they had not released any
GLX’s at that time with this stereo.  He said they may be out with the
half-year models or in the ’97s?

Anybody got any info?

I’m buying my first watercooled in a month. (Got a ’69 Ghia Conv.)

'84 Cabby's Speedometer going nuts!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:27 am

I have an ’84 VW convertible that is having speedometer problems.
The speedometer reads about double what the actual speed is, but it is
consistantly reading this so I actually have figured out what the exact
speed I am going when the speedometer reads something else.  Anyway, my
question is this, does this require that I replace the speedo with one
that came out of the exact same year or can I use a VW speedo that came
out of another rabbit?  I suppose that there is no way I can fix this…
or is there?

any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

A1 front motor mount sheet metal

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:50 pm

My 16V Scirocco is starting to have those nice sheet metal cracking
problems up front.  I have found a couple of possible solutions.  One
involving cutting part of the front sheet metal/motor mount out and
replacing it with some 10-12 gauge metal, welding nuts on the back, etc,
etc..

The other solution, which will most likely be a good complement to the
above solution, is to design a bar that goes from the motor mount to
each of the bumper brackets/frame rails.

My question is, does anyone have specs or a model for the bar idea?  I
already have some pvc pipe to make a model, but I would rather not have
to screw around with designing one, if some else has already done it and
is willing to share :)

This is a really sad issue, my car engine wise (for right now) is
basically stock.  The fact that I have to worry about sheet tearing on a
car that has 112,000 miles on it is ridiculous.  This issue is really
getting to me right now, because I have to deal with it.  From various
people I talk to, Scirocco 16Vs are the biggest problem children.  If it
were a heavily modified car, I could understand, but the fact that is a
pretty much stock really makes me mad…anyway, I will stop ranting and
raving for now…

Jetta GLI Overheating!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:49 pm

hey folks,

i need some help with this problem.  i haven’t been on this group for a
while since i changed jobs so this may have been discussed before.

my ’91 Jetta GLI has started running considerably hotter lately.  it’s
temp normally hovers around 220 degrees.  however, now whenever the car
is idling for more than a minute, the temp starts rising rapidly.  the
fan starts kicking in at about 240 degrees.  sometimes the temp goes even
higher.  after turning the engine off, the fan continues to run for at
least 15 minutes to cool off the radiator which appears to be draining
the battery.  the car usually won’t start after this episode and needs a
jump start.  i had the battery checked out and it check fine.  i believe
the problem is that the engine gets so hot that it takes the fans too
long to cool the radiator and drains the battery.   has anyone else had
this situation?

i just moved to Atlanta and need a good mechanic.  can anybody recommend
a good one or recommend a VW dealership to go to.  i didn’t have much
luck with Lewis Welch VW in Morrow.   thanks.

2.0l 16V motor mounts worn?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:49 pm

I have a 92 GTI 16V with 110,000 kms on it.  I just bought it so I don’t
know how it has been driven in the past.  I am having trouble shifting
smoothly  at any rpms, partiularly high rpms.  This is my third GTI (84
Rabbit GTI, 87 GTI 8V) and the first one I have had any trouble shifting
smoothly in.  Normally, I pride myself on my smooth shifts.  I can rock
the engine noticable if I lean over the engine bay and pull on the intake
manifold with my right hand.  IS this normal?  Is there a known problem
with 16V engine mounts? Which one should I replace first? I know the
particulars of engine mounts on A1 cars, and never had a problem with my
87 GTI 8V (215,000 kms), So what gives with the 16V.  Help please.

Thanks,
James
