"Still Life with Volkswagens"

Just found a hilarious book entitled "still life with volkswagens" by
Geoff Nicholson……very funny and actually mentions all sorts of neat
stuff like Heb convertibles,  KDFwagens,  etc.

Best Way to wash my VW?

What is the best way to wash a new VW.  I wash my car once a week and wax
it every couple of weeks.  What should be used to wash the car? What is
the best way to dry the car? I want to avoid getting those fine scratches
throughout the paint.  Any ifno posted would be a great help. Thanks in
advance.

grime?

When washing my car today I was using my nail to scrape off some dirt. But
then noticed that there is a thin layer of grey grime on the car.
Underneath that crap, the car is very white (!!). Washing the car doesn’t
seem to get this stuff off, I have noticed bug remover helps. Although
this is a pain as I have to rub the bodywork quite hard and use a lot of
bug remover. Should I try a different brand of car wash (currently I use
Turtle Wax)? Or should I have it valeted ("detailed" in U.S. speak)?

Looking forward to comments,

Derek

asking for advice from Siberia

And you thought you got strange mail…ROFL.
In any case, if one of you could help this guy (I think he’s
authentic) please send the dimensions to him directly or me.
I do not have the measurements for Golfs (just Sciroccos).

At least now i know what a Kuvalda is and that you need a
University degree to use it :->

"ANDREY M. KUDRYAVTSEV"

Dear Jan!
I am a lonely owner of VW Golf 1 (turbodiesel, 1983 year)
here in Novosibirsk, Russia. Many years I was happy driver,
but a week ago a drunken bastard has bumped into my
parked car. One of the consequence of this shock is the
shifting of front fix points of both front suspension levers
(point where cylindrical gummi-metalic plug -called in
russian silentblock- is installed and tightened by a bolt).
I have a superlarge hammer (kuvalda in Russian) and
University education to use it correctly. But I know nothing
about main initial dimensions of my car (German manuals,
which I have, contain only values of tightening efforts for
millions of bolts and nuts and nothing useful). I mean the
following dimensions:
1. "rail tracks" of front wheels;
2. the distance between front and back wheel axises;
3. the distance between upper ends of the front amortizators;
and, at last, if anybody can look at his car from below,
4. the distance between fixing bolts of left  and right
suspension levers.
May be you will give me email addresses, where I can find
the answers? Sorry for the troubles and thank in advance.
Cordially, Andrey Kudryavtsev.
P.S. I have found your address in WWW and understand
that you know what to advise.

FS: 78 Audi Fox

Hi all,

I have this car for sale with a bad front strut assembly on the passenger
side. I haven’t been able to find the part to fix it. Right now it’s not safe
to drive since the rotted part is connected to the steering bolt. I think
this part could even be fixed by a skilled machinist/welder. Anyways, the rest
of the car is in good shape, only 67K miles. Send me an e-mail if your
interested. I’m on the NW side by Belmont and Austin. Thanks.

175K miles and still going (88 VW Golf)

On the occasion of my 88 VW Golf GL’s odometer passing 175,000 miles,
I just wanted to post this fact for VW owners who might be wondering
how durable their VW actually may be.  Mine is one of the last from
the assembly line in Pennsylvania.  When I bought the car, I figured
0-50K miles was it’s youth, 50-100K middle age, and 100-150K old age.
For 1-2 years now I’ve been mentally preparing to buy a new car, but
this one just keeps going and going and going and going.  I’m
impressed, and regret that VW doesn’t make a small station wagon (am
thinking about Saturn).

As you might suspect I do mostly highway driving, but I still think
175K is a decent accomplishment.  My oil changes have averaged every
5000 miles or so, and I do try to give it 20W50 in the summer.
High/low lights of maintenance/repair history:
-The only serious defect was substandard grease in CV joints, which
caused a hard to diagnose, intermittent scraping sound.  Eventually at
about 50K miles it became nearly continuous and it sounded so bad I
was sure my transmission was grinding itself apart.  Still, the
(inner) joint just needed cleaning and repacking, and has been with
the car since then.
-Both fuel pumps died at about 125K miles.
-Original clutch, starter, air conditioner (engine and trans, of
course)
-Original alternator lasted ~155K miles.
-Original heater replaced by factory recall; original radiator
replaced at ~120K after front-end accident.
-Body has a few spots of surface rust
-Average about 30 MPG now, maybe down a couple MPG from a few years
ago.

Practically speaking, I still wouldn’t be surprized if it leaves me
stranded someday soon and dies a sudden death.  If anyone has
experience with how VWs usually go at this stage, post or email me.

Is the idle stabilizer repairable? (Scirocco 16V)

Hi all,
My car idles very fast (@1500-2000 RPM) after a ride on the highway.
Can I clean the idle stabilizer or do something about it. I’m told
it’s an expensive piece of equipment, but it doesn’t affect my driving
yet.
TIA

SPRINGS FOR BOGE TURBO GAS

Within a month or so i will be in need of lowering springs for my
’92 GTI 16V to compliment the 16" borbet type C wheels i am purchasing.
I have heard pros and cons about all the different combinations using boge
turbo gas.  if anyone has any experience or recommendations, please let me
know.  Obviously, i’ll be looking at a firmer ride either way but i’d like
to keep it relatively comfortable.  thanks in advance.

Golf Starter

Could somebody tell me how to remove the starter from a
VW Golf 1985?  Is this something I should let the pros do?

Thanks
