Okay, I’ve talked or typed to -alot- of people about this subject, and
gotten just as many different opinions. Everyone I talked to said to get
a K&N filter (which I will), and others recommended different brands for
all of the other components. I know that Neuspeed is overpriced, but
aside from that, can somebody who’s seen both sides of the fence tell me
what I should get?
I’m looking at a throttlebody (generic and used), an Autotech "G-grind"
cam, a TT stainless steel exhuast system, a TT dual-lead downpipe (I have
the dual exhaust manifold. Forgot to mention, I have a 82 Rabbit Convert
w/ the stock engine (1.6L?), an upperfront stress bar (which I beleive to
be the most crucial and easy to install, am I right?), and -maybe- a
higher-volume oil pump from Parts Place.
Plz help me out here! Replies via email appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Mitch

Was wondering if anyone might have suggestions for a friend. His 86 Golf
is sputtering and chokn/dies at both high and low speeds. zhe has changed
fuel pump up front and all electrical ignition stuff as well. There is an
internal fuel pump which he has not done anything to. Relays have been
changed for fuel pump, oh and fuel filter was changed. Please email me
with suggestilns/solutions.

I recently bought an engine to put in my Rabbit pickup. It has, clearly
marked, an engine code beginning with "JF". Since it’s an 84 and
carburated, I’ve been told it may be Canadian. Anyone know what this is
[1715?]. Thanks for any info!

I found the FAQ’s once, but forget how and I didn’t mark. How do I get
back, please. I’m mostly interested in engine upgrades that’ll fit in an
81 pickup. Thanks!

I need to recharge the AC on both a 1982 Rabbit Diesel and
a 1988 VW GTI 16V. Unfortunately, the Bentley manual
skips AC altogether. I need to know which nipple is the
low-pressure side and which is the high-pressure side
on both of the cars listed above. On the Rabbit, both
nipples are located near the compressor. On the GTI,
One is located on the passenger side of the car at the
rear of the engine compartment and the other is located
at the front of the compartment above the radiator. Could
someone identify which is the high and low side on either
or both of these cars. Or, tell me how I can figure out
which is the high and the low.
Thanks for any and all assistance!

I’m strongly considering purchasing a VW Passat TDI. Not being
terribly mechanical, but liking very much the fact that this cars
seems to offer a wonderful mix of fuel economy and feeling of power/
torque, I asked an engineer friend of mine what he thought about
the car. He knew of its excellent reputation in Germany, which is
comforting, but was worried about the longevity of the engine, since
it apparently operates at very high speed (and of course, like previous
generation diesles, under great pressure) or revolutions compared
to its predecessors.
Comments? I’m aware that VW has an excellent 10 year warranty on
their power train, but nevertheless would like to be in the strongest
position possible to avoid mechanical breakdown while out on the road.
I have test driven this car twice now, and the feeling of speed/power
it offers just boggles the mind. I’d expect it to get more like 17
mpg, rather than its 45! :)
Anyway, all help app[reciated, and I’d be anxious to hear other comments
any of you may have on the car as well.
Also, anyone know if the TDI van is slated to come to the US?

The stock 0-60 time is 8.5 seconds. I don’t know what kind of
gains the exhaust you have gives, but I wouldn’t imagine it would give
anymore than a tenth or two of a second drop. I’d say the gains seen
from the exhasut might re-claim the hp lost by the miles that the car has
been driven, so I’d say 8.5 seconds would be about it.

To those in the know.
Mike Potter, VW parts guru extraordinaire, has finally joined the
party here on the net. He is new to the whole internet thing and is
only now beginning to understand the vast and complex world of posting
articles and replying to flames. But he does seem genuinely
interested in this newsgroup (duh) and what goes on here.
Mike isn’t that computer friendly. Would you be if you stood in front
of a terminal all day at work helping some bonehead decide which color
floormats he should buy? However, he will be getting help from his
wife (you gotta switch back to Windows 3.1 Kristen, Windows 95
sucks!) and myself.
Please don’t inundate him with e-mails and questions. The guy is only
human and he can’t answer everyone’s questions. Mike brings many
years of VW watercooled parts knowledge with him. Having also worked
for a major aftermarket supplier (you probably know who it is) he has
a good insight into what performance products are worth getting and
which aren’t. He also knows what stuff is on the horizon, often
before it gets into EC. As stated in the FAQ, Mike also races (Solo
II autocross) a nicely "upgraded" Scirocco and an ’86 GTI 16V.
Please join me in welcoming Mike to the Net.

Pros:
runs, driven daily… 135k miles, motor strong
quad round headlight setup (a la ’80 Scirocco) puts weak stock
rectangular aero
headlights to shame. Looks vaguely like the expensive euro
setup.
single wiper looks and works great….also adapted from ’80 ‘rocco
16v Fuba antenna looks cool…but does not properly amplify…see cons
section:)
awesome brakes (4 wheel disks in perfect working order)
good close ratio 5 sp tranny….from ’89 Jetta 16v….don’t worry self
destruction
4 relatively new Bridgestone RE900 tires…lots o’ tread
Cons:
Huge "spider web" crack in center of windshield…visibility impaired
only on right
turns :)
light rust ( esp. hatch and doors)
Fuba 16v antenna w/ non functional amp yields shitty radio reception
at least one blown strut
engine mgmt system not at 100%…suspected fuel delivery problem…car
idles
rough….peak power at perhaps 80% of what it should be.
that’s all i can think of at this rediculous hour.
car is located in western Michigan: Whitehall
