For quite some time now I’ve had a problem starting my car
(intermittently). I’ll have to keep the key turned and actually pump
the gas pedal to get it going, it’s like the starter is turning but
the engine won’t ‘catch’.
These last few days however, the car is really sputtering for a good
few minutes after startup in the morning. It will sputter when I try
and get moving after stopping at a light. Sometimes when I’m shifting,
I’ll have to drop it back into neutral, or put my foot back on the
clutch again, give it some gas and then shift again. Most maintenance
items have been replaced in the last few years, plugs, rotor, cap,
fuel filter, air filter etc. etc. Should I be looking at fuel, air, or
spark? I’m thinking fuel or air, would the Idle air control valve
being ‘stuck’ starve the engine of enough air to do this? then after
it gets warmed up work fine? just guessing as I’m sure you can see.
Any advice would be much appreciated

My original Goodyear Eagle LS’s on my 2000 Golf GLS 1.8T are getting pretty
worn in the center. This is mainly my fault for refusing until recently to
run them at 26psi as suggested. They handle horribly at 26psi, and only
marginally better at higher pressures. Anyway, I would really like put on
some larger wheels than the 15" ones that came with the car. However, I
can’t really afford that anytime soon. But I’d like a little more rubber on
the ground. I don’t want to sacrifice fuel economy or ride a great deal, but
would like a bit more cornering and breaking performance. So, I was
wondering would it be worth it to go to a plus zero size (a bit wider but a
lower aspect ratio to maintain the total circumference)? I can afford a bit
more circumference as my speedometer is registering about 1mph slower than
true speed for every 20mph (eg. speedometer says 63mph, true speed is
60mph).
Also, if I do decide to go to a wider tire, what would that mean using the
original spare on the unlikely event I should need it?
P.S. As a side note, any suggestions on a new wheel size? I was thinking
going to 16" or maybe even as large as 17".
Howdy. I’m looking for information on how to align the inner 5 1/4"
headlamps (driving lights ?) for my 91 A2 GTI. Page 13:30 of the Bentley
gives great information for the Outer 7" Headlamps, but how are the inners
meant to be aligned? Are they meant to supplement the high beams or
directed toward the ground? Or something altogether different? Any help or
web resources would be highly appreciated. TIA!

My exhaust system is shot and I’m thinking of replacing it right up to
the manifold, catalytic converter and all. Are there pitfalls? Is it
difficult to remove the manifold bolts without breaking them? Is this
a job for DIYer? I have done brakes, shocks, etc.
Thanks
Question
I have had several friends with trucks with diesel engines and they
have to add anti-jelling to the fuel. Do most of the TDI users out
there use anti-jelling in the winter. Also starting in very cold
conditions. How are they.
Thanks

Is there such a thing as a self adjusting clutch pedal or is it
wishful thinking on my part?
Today, I drove my 2001.5 Passat GL 1.8T (less than 20K miles) a bit
more aggressively than usual. I depressed the clutch pedal and
shifted gears forcefully. After a bit of this, the clutch pedal
became noticeably more difficult to depress and feels as if the pedal
experiences resistance and doesn’t want to return all the way. I
still can shift gears but the travel of the pedal seems reduced. Is
it possible that the pedal "sensed" the higher pressure I was applying
and "adjusted"? Or is this a hydraulic system and something has gone
bad? Help PLease!!
My daughter’s ’96 Jetta has tiny black particles stuck to the inside of the
windshield, no other glass. They appear to be < .05 in. in diameter and seem
bonded to the glass. They are irregular in size and shape but are clearly
three dimensionalThey cannot be removed with a fingernail. They are both
visible and feelable; I’ve never seen anything like them. The car recently
had minor bodywork and they cleand the interior as a courtesy. Could this be
some kind of cleaner residue?
I’m baffled

Did VW select the most difficult to clean and maintain cloth for their
interior of the Golf? There is constantly a fuzzy lint on the seat fabric
which is hard to remove and the carpet is like Velcro in attracting dirt.
Is there a car vacuum with a power head that is small enough to fit into the
various nooks and crannies and suck up the dirt which refuses to vacate when
using just a regular fabric attachment on a vacuum? BTW: its the black
cloth seats and black carpet.
