Ground locations on a 90 Jetta????

Hi I’m trying to find all the ground locations on my 90 Jetta. The car
has been working like crap, and before it finally quit I noticed that
it was surging? At idle the lights would dim and the Alt. would go
under load (belt would start to slip) for a few seconds then it would
come out of it? The Bentley says this is a sign of a bad ground. I
removed and cleaned the grounds starting on the battery post down to
the body then over to the engine block. I then cleaned the one on the
back corner of the head. Now I’m in search of more. I’d like to clean
all possible before I change the fried ECU. I’ve found the ground next
to the fuse panel and the one on the right strut tower. The Bentley
list’s a whole bunch more, but is not specific where they are located.
They say for instance " 15 on cyl. Head" then say " 29 near Cyl.
Head"? How about "38 beside starter lock switch" or "119 & 120 in
headlight wiring harness"?

Can anyone point out where I might find the grounds so I can make sure
they are all clean?

Thanks!

Alternators probs 87 cabriolet HELP!!!

Okay, I bought this car last february (02) and started havinging probs with
the charging system a couple months later… I parked the car and started
driving another car until i blew the head gasket in teh other car… so an
alternator is easier to change than a head gasket! anyhow… I put a new
alternator in last July and it did not seem to be charging as well as the
old one did. I only had about 13V, but the car seemed to do fine on this so
I wasn’t worried too much about it… well a month or so later the car was
barely getting 12V and left me stranded with a dead battery a couple of
times… so I exchanged the alt (these were both reman Bosch I believe).
Eventually that one went down to only charging at a little above 12, but I
just left it alone cause it had not left me stranded. However, They only had
a one year warranty on them and it was up this past weekend and I was headed
out of town so I figured I better see what I could do about swapping them
out. Well, while I had the alt off the car I took it to Autozone and tested
the alt… it was only charging at 2V!!! How I ever got by on thatI don’t
know! I just decided to return the alt and get my money back and go
elsewhere to get an alt (Autozone had their alt’s half price of what I paid
to get Bosch).

So, I install the new alternator like I have done so many times before (and
I tested this one BEFORE I installed it on the car and it looked to be
fine). Well, as soon as I turned the car on, I have 14V, but the battery
light and OXS light are on! WTF? so I tested the alt on the car… I have no
AMPS… I always thought that Voltage and AMPS went hand in hand, guess not.
So We determine that alt is bad… so I grab another… SAME deal! WTF????
Why is my battery light and OXS light coming on now with this new
alternator? everything is hooked up just like it was before… and what does
the oxs light even have to do with the charging system? I would really like
to drive this car again SOON… If anyone has any suggestions as to why this
is happening PLEASE let me know ASAP!!!! Why do I have no amperage? I don’t
think it is the alts now, I think it is the car somehow… where do I
start… HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Audio question

Hello all,

I was wondering if it the stock stereo in the ’99 golf, has an aux input or
something similar on the back??

I would like to be able to use my external mp3 player over the car stereo,
I’m not interested in replacing the receiver just yet, but plan a couple of
road trips in the near future where an mp3 player in the car would be nice.

Cheers,

Travis

Touareg…..what's your opinion?

vw has committed a lot of corporate resources to this vehicle……..of
course it has been released, not while the head of vw who approved  it’s
developement  is around, but on his replacement’s watch……are vw
customers gonna bite on a high 30′s to low 50′s sport ute?  what makes
it different than the W-8?  where does an audi version fit in, if at
all?
are the compliclated electronics going to make living with it
pleasurable?

just wondering about the group collective thoughts……….

regards

90 jetta for sale

Hi,

I need to get rid of my old A2 Jetta (Wolfsburg Edition).  The engine has
about 230K miles on it so it doesn’t have much life left in it there
although it still runs fine.  The brakes don’t work very well but that’s
probably due more to non-use than anything else.  I remember replacing the
clutch (Sach’s) not too long ago so it doesn’t have more than 10K miles on
it (although I’ll have to check my records to give you an exact number).
I’ve rarely driven this car over the past 1 1/2 years.  I only start it up
every couple weeks just to keep it running.  I was keeping it as a project
car but I just never found the time to do anything to it and now I’m moving
to another state by the end of July.  I currently have the dashboard removed
(sitting in the back seat) as I was diagnosing a lack of heat in the winter
time.  I believe the heater core needs to be replaced which is probably an
easy job now the 1/2 of the hard work is done.  I could reinstall the dash
if you want, although if you know what you’re doing with VWs you should fix
the heater core first, then reinstall the dash.  The car has a decent set of
VW tear drop rims (red tears), and the gauges were updated a couple years
ago with white overlays from 4130 products so they look fairly nice. The
tires don’t have much thread left on them so you’d need new tires.  I also
have a seperate set of steel rims (actually their the original silver steel
rims that came with 1990 Jetta’s) for use with winter tires – these tires
are taking up space in the garage so if someone takes the car they can have
these also.  I have the Bentley manual for this vehicle which also must go.
If someone wants the full bumpers this car has for their project car let me
know.  Everything must go.

If anyone is interested in parts or the whole vehicle let me know.  I am
either going to part this car out on eBay or if someone wants to take it off
my hands for a fair price I’m open to suggestions.  Frankly, I’d much more
inclined to sell the car whole as my remaining time in Massachusetts is
short and I have much to do before I move.  I live in Belchertown, MA so if
anyone wants to stop by to check it out let me know.  This car runs and
drives, however, given the strict lemon laws in Massachusetts and given the
age of this car, I doubt I will sell this car without stating ‘for parts
only’ to protect myself.  Contact me at the email address listed below and
I’ll get back to you quickly.

Thanks,

Kevin

'97 Jetta – rewire radio to bypass ignition switch

My ignition switch is flakey.  For a year I could run the radio in ANY position
(even without key), now I can run it only in one small sweet spot which is NOT
normal operating position…

so….

since no other function of the switch is affected & I am real low on funds…

the Bentley shows the radio wired to 1 signal on the ignition switch.  All I
need do is splice that lead from the radio to an appropriate power source.

Has anyone done this ???

Parts needed

I need a used fuel really for an 87 Golf. I bought a new one and
missplaced it so figured a used one would last till I stumble upon it.

Also in the market for a right side tail light.
