Headlight replacement questions…

I’ll try to be more clear about what I really need to know…

My ’87 Golf had a headlight conversion done to what I believe is a 16V Gti
Grille with H4 outer and H1 inner round headlights.  I recently busted out
one of the inner lenses and want to replace it.

What exactly do the terms H4 and H1 mean?  Are they specifically related to
size or something else?

What size is the inner lens for the 16V GTI?  On-line sources seem to always
indicate 5-1/4", but I measured mine and it is a little larger than 5-1/2"
across the face.  The outer lights measure 7".  Is there any setup that
would use a size other that 5-1/4"?

Where would be a good place to buy a replacement or get more information?

TIA

CIS with Turbo

Hello everyone,

I’m on a budget and I have everything I need to hook a garrett t3 turbo
up to my CIS injection car (or so I think I do

Is this even possible with this fuel system. If so, how the hell do I do it.
I’m about to buy a 2.0 ABA engine and going to swap the x-flow head with my
current 1.8L CIS head so I can do the swap. I’m going to be building the
engine in my garage, so I’m going to do all the turbo work then.
Has anyone done this before. I’m kinda confused on the whole idea of how it
connects to my current fuel system, and if it will even work. Apparently
it’s possible, or so I think, but can anyone give me an specifics. It should
run pretty good right?

'99 Passat beeps at startup

Since the temperatures here dropped below -20 my ’99 passat (80k miles)
gives 3 beeps right after I start it in the morning. It’s not the icy road
indicator, that’s not supposed to come on when this cold. No warning light
or anything lights up on the dashboard.

The first morning it happened the low coolant light was also blinking.
Checked under the hood and the coolant is at the LOW mark. Doesn’t seem to
be a leak, but could it be that the fluid just contracts quite a bit in
these low temperatures?

Otherwise it does fine in the cold.

what coolant to use?

I have a new to me 84 vanagon. The owners manual says to always mix half and
half water and coolant. Is this true? I also read something at vanagon.com
that said to always use phosphate-free coolant. Is this true? Any
combination of the two or other advice? There is a leak that I have not
investigated yet due to the sunny Cleveland weather.
Thank You,
Mike

living w/ a past mistake

Several years ago I was doing a budget clutch job (okay, I was broke).  I
had good replacement friction and plates, but the flywheel had a few minor
grooves in it.  I took it into work and had a lathe operator turn it down a
few thousanths, just until it was flat again.

Unfortunately, since then the life of a clutch has been only 35k miles or
so.  No, I’m not trying to "get rubber" in second gear, or do burnouts, or
any of that stuff.   Right now, I’m faced with another clutch job, where
I’ll pull out a glazed friction plate w/ lots of material left on it.

Is there something that I can do to address this situation besides breaking
down for a clutch kit that includes a new flywheel?

Throttle body tampering help.

Bentley said dont touch it. Last owner did :) Is there a way
to set it up? I am diagnosing a hesitation at part throttle… Throttle
position sensor checks out fine (resistance varies with pedal) but I am
afraid its not centered correctly…

Engine is ADD or 2E engine (not sold in the US) with Digifant
and a 3 wire TPS…

? After warranty repair: major condensation

I had my 2002 Jetta worked on a month ago.  The entire front and rear
driver’s side door panels were removed because of some rattles and
window regulator issues.

The other day, I was getting into my car at lunch time and I noticed
major condensation on my the driver’s side INSIDE front and rear side
windows.  This condensation also extended to about 25% on the  front
windshield (driver’s side).  The passenger and rear windows were all
fine.

Does it sound like a seal of some description was broken during the
reinstallation?
