QUESTION: cooling system

Hi there.

My 11 years old car recently started to experience cooling system
problems. It does not overheat. The problem is, once it gets at nominal
temperature, there ‘seems’ to be too much pressure building up in the
system. As a result, the hoses are leaking. I have tightened the metal
clamps (holding the hoses on the other parts) as much as possible but it
is not good enough.

One amateur mechanic told me there may be too much obstruction in the
system due to limestone accumulation in the radiator and other locations.

Is this possible?

Furthermore, he told be that a quick fix for that is to put 2 spoonful
of sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) in the coolant tank, run the
engine for a while and then flush the system.

Does that make sense? Is it safe?

To get rid of limestone, wouldn’t a product such as CLR (rust/limestone
remover) do better? Or is there a product available specifically for
this kind of cooling system maintenance?

Thanks

Converting to R-134

Hey Everyone,

I have decided to convert the air conditioning on my Jetta to R134…I have
bought the conversion kit, but I am not really sure how to go about
this…do I need to change my condenser as well?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2469023…

those are the conversion fittings that I bought for the car…and I will
take the car to an A/C shop to have the system charged.

In the meantime, is there a website that will show me what needs to be done?

Thanks,

Peter

Hi All, I’ll keep this short. Tried the A/C on my 96 jetta gl 2 liter
the other day and the compressor did not come on.  Checked for the relay
at the fuse box, position #1, and its not there.  Is there supposed to
be a relay or not??  Thanks.

2002 Jetta Station Wagon air conditioner stopped working

Our 2002 Jetta Wagon built in Germany has 35,000 miles and runs
flawlessly. Yesterday the air conditioner stopped blowing cold air.
All the fuses in the car have been checked and are OK. Pressure is OK
in the system and there is enough coolant. What’s the next most
obvious thing to check?

2003 Passat Front Bumper cover replacement

I’m looking for a replacement for my front bumper cover (new or used).
The car is a silver 2003 Passat Wagon.  ANy web iste ideas would be
appreaciated as well, I’m new to this board.

I’m not sure if I need a 2003 model, or I can use a previous model.
The 2001 seems to be a different design.

Thanks

Looking for used computer (Digisant) for '88 VW Golf

Looks like my 1988 VW Golf needs a new computer, and my mechanic is
having trouble locating a used one so I’m trying the internet. If
anybody has any clue where to find one, please let me know. Here’s the
info he gave me:

1–It’s a Digisant computer
2–The engine has electronic injection
3–The engine is an "RV" type.

Any help locating one will be appreciated.

'98 Passat – Radio in "2 SAFE" mode

Volks –

I realize that variations of this question come up here all the time, and
are answered… but none of the answers I’ve read has helped.

First of all, my manuals (apart from the basic one I keep in the glove
compartment) are in storage, so I was working from memory – not my strong
suit, I guess.

I’ve had to enter my code several times after having the car fixed, so I
vaguely remembered the procedure – but not well enough.  Also, I remember
that my code is either "0444" or "0777" – but I couldn’t remember which
(I tried "0444", twice, so I guess it’s the other one.)  Anyway, my radio
has apparently decided that I am 1) a car thief or 2) too incurably
stupid to deserve music while I drive.

I have the 6-disk trunk changer; on the radio’s cassette flap it says
"Volkswagen", not Bose or anybody else.  I have a big round SCAN button
at the top right (surrounded by the FM, AM, CD, Cass buttons); I have
<SEEK, SEEK>, <TUNE, and TUNE> buttons.  I have no stinking MODE button.

The display says "2   SAFE" and nothing on Earth, apparently, will change
it.  Am I just plain out of luck?  Do I have to break down and take it to
the dealer (and if I did, would they be able to unlock it from its
current paperweight mode?)

Thanks in advance – I discovered this forum this morning while Googling
for help on this problem, and already I’ve learned a bunch of useful
things… on other topics…

92 Golf Rad fan sensor

I think I fugred out the purpose of that little sensor thats stuck in the
side of my block, well was.  Now that it’s getting warmer, I’ve noticed
that if I’m driving and I have to stop for a while, if i let the engine
idle, the temp starts creeping up.  I’m starting to think that switch
controls the rad fan but I’m not sure.  If anyone knows where the fan
switch is on the 1.8 Digifants plz let me know, I gotta fix this before it
gets hotter outside

thanks

How long should the battery last???

Hi

I have a 2K Jetta GLX (purchased new in Oct. of 99). Lately if I park it in
the garage and don’t drive it for about a week the battery dies. And may
require a second jump after an initial drive. Car is located in Southern CA
and has about 50K.

Is it about time for a new battery?

Is there any way to check what the problem is i.e. alternator etc. without
going to the dealer/garage.

Suggestions on what is the best brand of battery I should replace it with?

Thanks, Martin
