Good dealer/VW repair shop in St. Louis area?

I have moved to a small town in Illinois, whose nearest metro areas are St.
Louis and Springfield IL.

Can anyone recommend a good dealer or VW repair shop in either of these
areas, or better yet in the Quincy/Hannibal area?

Ansa mufflers are any good?

I found a shop that sells Ansa VW replacement mufflers, and was wondering if
these are comparable to the Bosal mufflers that previous posters
recommended.

1995 VW Golf… another problem/question…

it’s me again…

I stopped at the drugstore on Sunday afternoon after driving back from the
cottage to pick up some cream for my sunburn which has left my body the
colour of a nicely cooked lobster… I got back into my car, put the key in
the ignition and turned.  The car starts, but doesn’t seem to ‘catch’ (if
that makes any sense) when I release the key.

I’ve recently replaced the battery, but no other work has been done on it,
and I figure it needs a good "check-up".

Does anyone know what’s wrong here? And/or how much it’s going to cost to
fix it (or how much parts are?)?

Thanks

oh, and to those of you that helped answer my car stereo question- I checked
the fuse and it was toast, so I’ve replaced it, but I’ve yet to put the
stereo in to see if it works…. thanks for all your help!!

AC problem in a 96 Golf

My girlfriend’s AC cut out one day all at once. Had an open clutch coil and
12v at the connector, so I replaced the compressor/clutch assembly,
recharged, and now have nothing! Ac button light turns on, fuse is good,
and engine idle flutters just a bit, but I get zippy voltage at the
clutch. I’m a asian import guy and am on the wrong side of the planet with
this thing. PLease help!!!

thanks forthe help!:)

a while back I posted a question regarding a 90 golf 1.8L with no backup
lights. After replacing the switch, I still had no lights. I finally got the
time to take a look at it again, and after reading all your suggestions, it
turns out that indeed you have to swap the terminals around on the
multi-wire black sensor. Thanks for all your help folks!

Uboo

BTW, the original switch was definitely toast

92 Jetta Starter, Guru needed

The 92 Jetta has trouble starting.  I have replaced the alternator
because it was not testing well and may not have been fully charging the
battery.  This had no effect.  With a fully charged battery, it starts
fine.  If I start it about 5 times in succession it will quit starting
and all I get it a rapid clicking sound (solenoid?) although the battery
still shows 11 volts or so. (when it does start, it starts right away,
not a lot of cranking)

Replaced the starter and the same symptoms show.

Thought the starter might be starved of current so I cleaned up the
ground contact on the block.  Same symptoms!

What am I forgetting?  Please let me know what else I should check.

Thanks for any help,     David Abineri

Starting problems and bad performance with cold engine

Passat B5 1999 with 2,3 V5 (AGZ engine), 100000 km/62500 miles.
Motronic M3.8.2 injection.

Have had intermittent problems during last year with very bad performance
during acceleration first 2-3 mins when cold started, but not every cold
start.

Replaced O2 sensor 6 months ago, slightly better but problem still there.
Mechanic suggested trying replacing MAF sensor too, but hadn’t anyone
available.

Now: Needs 4-5 tries when starting cold, then starts reluctantly.
Really bad performance first 2-3 mins, then ok but still not really good.

"Bad performance" means accelerator works like inverted. That is, when I
press the accelerator on 2nd gear, the power decreases. When I release the
accelerator, (some) power gets back.

The problem basically shows only with cold engine.

Gets these two faults now and then:

00561 – Mixture Adaptation
12-00 – Adaptation Limit (Mul) Exceeded

00525 – Oxygen Sensor (G39)
27-10 – Implausible Signal – Intermittent

00561 has not returned for a couple of days, 00525 returns more often.

In the "readiness" window everything usually looks ok except the last one,
catalytic something…

I have tried cleaning the MAF with electronics cleaner, containing
Isopropanol and CFC22. I have been reading about people using carb cleaner
and other stuff, I’m not sure what chemicals I "dare" to try.
A problem with my type of MAF sensor is that I can’t see the platinum
wire, so I don’t see the effect of the cleaner, I’m just spraying the
cleaner through the "intake".

Tried disconnecting the MAF, two starting attempts failed.
Then I reconnected the MAF, and it started rightaway!

Repeated next day (cold engine again) this time one failed attempt with
MAF disconnected, 2nd attempt with MAF connected, started!

But if I try with the MAF connected at 1st attempt, I need 4-5 attempts.

No error codes have returned for the last couple of sessions, but the
catalytic… in the readyness window stills says error.

Does this make sense to anyone!?

Looking at the VAGCOM displays when running most things looks sane,
including the two temperatures (coolant and, I suppose, intake air) and
air flow ranges between 3 and 30 g/s.

The O2 value is ± 25%, but when idling it’s ± maybe 2% only.

The ignition timing is about -30 degrees, seems like some
misinterpretation by the program?

So, any suggestions are welcome.
I have some VAG logs too.

Should I be looking for a new MAFS?
Or should I be looking for something else?
Could a bad MAFS really make the engine that hard to start only when cold?
To me it seems like something else, maybe something with the fuel
pressure?

Could the new O2 sensor have gone bad in just 6 months?
Or is this an indication of something else?

Thanks for any input,
Jonatan Lindell

Knock sensor – '87 16V

My GLI 16V CIS-E is running sluggish, and won’t rev over 4500.
I suspect the tappet noise and maybe other noises are making the knock sensor
back down the timing and whatever else it does to stop pinging.
So how can I check this?   What happens if I just disconnect the knock sensor
– will it revert to "normal" uncontrolled parameters, or will it go full scale
one way or the other?
