Speedo rev counter etc. dead on 96 Passat

Passal CL 1.9 TD, 1996.
The speedo, rev counter fuel, temp gauge, LCD clock and LCD mileometer
(console area) are all gone down.
I can hear faint clicking from behind the speedo and every now and then the
LCD items briefly
light up, only to die again.
1) Is it a big job getting into the console area to have a look at these.
2) As usual, any suggestions ?

1996 Passat shifting problem

I recently (2 weeks, 500 miles) purchased a 96 passat GLX, today in
stop and
go traffic I suddenly could not find 1st or second gear!  No lead up
at all,
no grinding, no popping out of gear just went for first and found
third, looked for second…only fourth!  Any quick help is appreciated
as I need to get this
car home (35 miles) after work.  It has 90K, with no records, clutch
seems OK, won’t be for long with no first or second.

Thanks

Engine coolant light

Hello,
I have a Volkswagen Jetta (about 3 years old, 36k miles) and the engine
collant warning light comes on every morning (it’s standing on a flat
driveway) – when I drive a couple minutes and restart the car the light is
off.
The coolant level is over the minimum level (I got it refilled) but still
the problem didn’t go away.

Any ideas?
Can it be dangerous for the engine like the handbook suggests?
Thanks!
Peter

Passat 91 Coolant pump

I am about to replace a coolant pump on VW Passat 91 (the early 91
model with air conditioning and clutch based pulley)

Since I’ll be taking the belts off I am also thinking to replace some
of them since the whole thing will be apart. What other belts/may be
pulleys one would recommend to replace at the same time?

Tnx!

Question: Regarding wheel offset and WTB: 1995 Jetta III steel wheel

Hello-
My wife has a bent front rim on her 1995 Jetta III.  She has the 14"
steel wheels and
as I call around to salvage yards, they ask me: "Does it have a 43mm or 45mm
offset?"
Now I have a digital caliper and can measure 43/45mm, but I am not sure
where to
take the measurement…. Any help???

Additionally, if someone has upgraded to nice alloy/chrome rims and has a
spare steel wheel sitting around that they know fits a ’95 Jetta III, please
contact me at
honda…@comcast.net thanks

Which Walmart key for '98 jetta?

I just bought a Jetta but it only came with the valet key. I took it
to Walmart and explained to the key cutting drone that I wanted a key
but that it would have a different profile than the key I was handing
him. He then proceeded to try to jam my key into each of the ‘it’s
this key’ holes behind the counter and then handed it back to me
saying he didn’t have a match. I asked him if he understood that the
key would be different and he said he did.

I’m not saying he was dumb but either way, there was some kind of
miscommunication going on and I don’t have much patience for that so I
took my key and left (or rather continued shopping but that doesn’t
sound as dramatic).

Does anyone know if Walmart can cut master keys for ’98 Jettas and if
so, what number key blank to use?

Thanks

2000 Cabrio Driver's Window Weatherstripping Question

It seems the weatherstripping in my Cabrio’s driver’s window may need to
be replaced. When I close the door, the rubber seal of the top of the
window bends inward from the window instead of folding and then falling
over the window after the door is closed like I think it is supposed to
do. I can get the rubber over the window if I lower the window and then
raise it again, but there is a part of the rubber that always remains
under the window (this part of the rubber is the part that is supposed
to go over the plastic part of the window that holds the mirror; right
now this part stays bent inward under the plastic instead of over it).
Wind noise is beginning to leak into the car in this part of the seal.

My question is this: Can I do anything to make my existing rubber seal
to seal properly? If I have to replace it, what is the best way to do
it? Via the dealer? I guess I could do it myself if it’s real easy…
but in that case, what is the best place to buy the replacement?
Hopefully I won’t have to use any adhesives, etc… If I do get a new
seal, what is the best way to maintain it so that this doesn’t happen
again (I know of at least another Cabrio with the same problem, so it
may be a common fault).

Thank you in advance,

Hey all-
Thanks for the help on the offset….
I need a replacement 14" steel wheel for a 1995 Jetta III….
I know that this is a 45mm offset rim….

The clutch spring has a bunch of fingers that point in toward the center
where the throwout bearing pushes them in to disengage the clutch. It’s
kinda like a softdrink cup straw hole, but that only has four fingers.

I wonder if the bearing fell through where the finger broke off (split) and
left a large enough space.
