'84 Cabby's Speedometer going nuts!

I have an ’84 VW convertible that is having speedometer problems.
The speedometer reads about double what the actual speed is, but it is
consistantly reading this so I actually have figured out what the exact
speed I am going when the speedometer reads something else.  Anyway, my
question is this, does this require that I replace the speedo with one
that came out of the exact same year or can I use a VW speedo that came
out of another rabbit?  I suppose that there is no way I can fix this…
or is there?

any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

You can’t fix it.  You *can* use any speedo that VW ever built.
Some will fit your car better than others though.

Before you put a new speedo in, you would be well advised to
check all the ground cables and straps between the battery and engine
block.  Believe it or not, when one of those goes bad or has a dirty
connection, the first thing to go is the speedo.  It’s a long story.
Take my word for it or I’ll be forced to post a long explanation of why
    it happens.

Check your yellow pages for a local speedo shop. Sometimes general
auto electric places have the equipment. If you take the speedo out
yourself and take it to them, they can recalibrate it in 15 minutes.
    Should cost you about $20.

Kinda hairy getting it out, though.
