Well, my son was driving the GTI yesterday and claims he just "shifted", it’s
almost like the transmission fell apart…
Can barely get the car into first gear now and the linkage is terribly loose.
Is it time to call it a parts car?

Check out the linkage and figure out what is loose, may just have been a worn out bushing or something:

Not necessarily. You’ll want to check the linkages, especially the plastic
ends as they are susceptible to breakage after many years of wear. I’m
assuming you have no leaks from the transmission?

It depends what kind of shape the car is in all around. I had no qualms
about putting a rebuilt tranny into my 87 Golf at 200,000 miles, because I
knew that the chassis and engine were both good for another 200,000.
But as the other posts say, it is quite possibly just a linkage issue.
Especially if it has all the gears and isn’t making scary noises.
