97 golf engine vs. 96 jetta

Hello –

I just got this 97 Golf K2 – in looking at the engine the first
thing I noticed compared to the 96 jetta I have is that there is this
cylindrical black component just to the left of the distributor cap.
It has a hose to the air filter and an other to the back  of the
engine, no belts are attached to it. What is this new device? For all
I can see it just get in the way of changing the distributor cap.

Also – any advice on plugs, wires, any other things that are to be
known about 97 Golfs?

Thanks for your input,
Scott.
