To those in the know.
Mike Potter, VW parts guru extraordinaire, has finally joined the
party here on the net. He is new to the whole internet thing and is
only now beginning to understand the vast and complex world of posting
articles and replying to flames. But he does seem genuinely
interested in this newsgroup (duh) and what goes on here.
Mike isn’t that computer friendly. Would you be if you stood in front
of a terminal all day at work helping some bonehead decide which color
floormats he should buy? However, he will be getting help from his
wife (you gotta switch back to Windows 3.1 Kristen, Windows 95
sucks!) and myself.
Please don’t inundate him with e-mails and questions. The guy is only
human and he can’t answer everyone’s questions. Mike brings many
years of VW watercooled parts knowledge with him. Having also worked
for a major aftermarket supplier (you probably know who it is) he has
a good insight into what performance products are worth getting and
which aren’t. He also knows what stuff is on the horizon, often
before it gets into EC. As stated in the FAQ, Mike also races (Solo
II autocross) a nicely "upgraded" Scirocco and an ’86 GTI 16V.
Please join me in welcoming Mike to the Net.

He Has Been Assimilated . . . . . .
It’s about time ! Not only does he have to learn how to
use a PC, his poor wife now has to learn how to use
Windows 95, then try to show Mike how to do it all.
I’d like to be sitting on the couch watching *that* show ! !
But nobody is faster on the Parts Dept terminal than
Mike is, so he’s already got the keyboard skills

OK, since I don’t know either person, I’ll serve as the official M/C.
Question number 1:
Give me the VW part number for the hose kit with check valve that VW is
now installing to correct hard-starting VR6 cars.
[I have the answer, and know for a fact that many dealer's parts and

service deparments don't. Let's see who the contender, and who's the

Okay Arthur, that was a good one but you suffice to say that I am a
"contender" not a pretender.
The "kit" part # is 1E0201219. That is hose with check valve. Check
valve alone is #165201542.
The real fix for the problem is changing the fuel pump #1H0919051AL.
Since your so smart, here’s one for you.
Give me the list of #’s it takes to remove A/C and retain P/S on an A2

I thought the kit was 1H0998759, or at least that’s what the instruction
sheet in the kit said. I figured that I’d give you a break – I could have
asked for all the part numbers (and prices) to add the not available in
the USA Syncro option to my GTI VR6.

Okay Mr. ’95 GTI Guru, where exactly does this "kit" go and for what
purpose does it serve? Like anyone cares! Especially since, if it
was a big deal with VW they would have published something about it
but maybe for a car with only 3,000 of them built it wasn’t worth
mentioning. Also, who in their right mind would buy a 20K car and
dump mega bucks into making it AWD only to not be able to get parts
easily. They would most definitely have to be someone like you who
knows everything there is to know.

Why would ANYBODY want to do that?????
Actually Bud, A LOT OF PEOPLE NEED TO DO THIS. Most VW owners do not
have nor want to spend $600 plus labor in some cases to buy a new A/C
compressor. Where I come from there is no reason to lose the sale
because they can’t afford the compressor and they need something to
make their car run so here’s a cheap solution. BRILLIANT IDEA HUH
ARTHUR! It’s about $150 for anyone interested, especially AutoXers,
16V’s also available.
