Check engine light

Hello,

I have a 2001 Golf GLS, the check engine light just came on (37796 miles).
Does anyone know what it could be? The engine seems to run fine, sound fine
and I did not lose any power. Also no smells from the exhaust system.

Thank you Volker

I think the prudent advice is wait till you notice a real problem unless you
are rolling in $$$, in that case go get the computer readout at a mechanic.

As an example mine came on after a bad start in really wet weather where the
ignition misfired slightly.  It takes 17 normal starts for the light to reset
itself spaced over a 10 day period (or something like that.)

I truly believe its programmed to be a $$$ maker for the dealership.

OTOH if you are under warranty & can spare the downtime go for it!

That light comes on for any of about 100 issues that could be wrong from not
having a tight gas cap to more serious problems. Got to have the fault code
before any guess can be made.

It could be many things, but most cars have a computers that keeps track
of problems and stores information about what may be wrong.  The first step
is to have the computer scanned to see if there are any error codes.  Some
autopart stores will do this for free; try Autozone.

Just because your engine seems to be running fine does not mean
something is not working right that could cause more expensive repairs if
you don’t do something now.  Many times it is nothing more than a loose gas
cap, other times you might be destroying your catalytic converter or
    something else.

It is really foolish to ignore it.

why would such a new car, with such low kilometers have any sort of
    problem to begin with.  ?

There’s so many sensors and such on cars nowadays.  IMO its just more stuff
to go wrong.  Granted, today’s cars seem to run a hell of a lot better than
    the old days though.

Check that your gas cap is tight and see if it goes away, that’s a common
cause of the light. (a loose cap makes the computer think something else is
wrong).  But like the other posts said, it could be anything.

How many things that will illuminate the light cause damage if you ignore
it, and the engine seems to be running fine?  Aren’t the majority of the
causes of the light emissions related?  Sometimes on an intermittant problem
it’ll go anyway for a while.  Out of sight out of mind.  :-)  I wouldn’t
ignore it forever though esp. if your car seems to be running bad.

Why would anything go bad.  Defective parts or workmanship.  Something
missed during assembly.  Lots of possibilities.  Most likely it is nothing
of importance, but since there is a chance of a problem, it should IMHO be
    checked.

The car may be almost two years old so I would not be suprised if there
was a problem, even with low mileage.  It is also likely to be covered by
warrantee, but if the owner waits it may no longer be covered.
