Differences between Sciroccos

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:24 pm

Hi:
I’m looking at getting a Scirocco II (82-88), and was wondering what the
differences were w/ engine, etc. and if there are any models to look out
for (I’ve heard bad things about the 85). Which years had the JH 1.8l,
and which had the old 78hp 1.6?

thanks * 1e6
(thanks a million)

I have an ’84.  It has been reliable.  For a performance boost see the
Techtonics Tuning literature.  The 84 has one of the more restrivtive
    downpipes.

’83 through ’87 8v models had the JH motor.

  3. Matt,
some of the differnces for the scirrocos were the 16v motors became
available in the 86 and up cars, I’m not sure what year they switched
from the 1.6 to the 1.8, and in the 1984′s the AC compressor and the
generator are switched in their lay out in the engine compartment.
The wheels changed style a little bit over the years but were always
    13′s until the 16v’s.
The 85 1/2 and newer cars came with the larger wing and the 16 v and
some of the 8 v had the black out striped tailights.
The 83 scirocco’s had the word Scirocco in script underneathe the tail
on the inside of the rear window.
these are jus some of the differences bewteen some of the years.  I
have  a 1985 1/2 Wolfsburg edition Scirocco that was featured in EC, VWT,
and SCC about 2 1/2 years ago and still enjoy driving it as much as I can.

The 85 and up 8V had 94hp, while the older ones had 90.

My 85 had that as well.

The big differences are between the 8V and 16V. The 16V has lots of extras:
10.1" front disks vs 9" on 8V, rear disks vs drum on 8V, GTI springs(20?mm
lower than regular), ground effects, roof antenna, 16V engine, CIS-E
injection, knock sens ignition, 14" wheels, factory lower stress bar,
leather, different speedometer, and some other stuff I can’t think of right
    now.

If you’re looking to get one, the 16V is the one most likely to be found in
good shape with relatively low miles, as it it somewhat newer. Plus, since
most prices are around $3000 for the later ones, by getting a 16v, you’re
getting alot of extra goodies for free.

  5. Except for the ’82, which may have had the 1.7, all ’82 and up 8V
Sciroccos have the JH engine. Beautiful thing, while the A2 golf and jetta
bodied cars were being built in Mexico the Sciroccos were being built in
Germany. All Sciroccos were built in Germany. No bad years for the JH
engine. Always solid lifter. ’82 car still had the single wiper blade like
the A1 body ‘rocco. 2 blades in ’83. Sciroccos always had the same
suspension set-up (swaybars added later) from ’75 to ’88 16V’s!

  6. Jonah,
First of all, I just want to tell you that my baby (an ’86 GTI) sits on
the streets of Philadelphia pretty much all of the time.  It’s silver, and
I’ve never considered the color to be a problem.  If theft is an issue,
let me give a few suggestions:
First, I installed an alarm with starter kill.  did it myself, only
cost me about $150 and two days labor to get it all right.
Second, got my self a nice craftsman 1/2" driver and proper socket to
remove the steering wheel when it’s parked.
Also got myself a set of armor door plates.  keeps the screwdriver out
    of my door handles.
And of course, detachable face Sony Cd player.
Of course, we all know that in the city, you’re never really safe, but I
think all of these things help.
Next of all, have you considered an ’86?  They are pretty plentiful, and
the ’87′s are mostly 16v’s – an insurance detriment.  the 86′s have all of
the improvements you spoke of, and personally, mine’s got plenty of get up
and go.  I’m somewhat of a performance freak, so I’ve tuned it, but it was
plenty good to start.  As far as miles, on a well maintained car, not too
much of an issue.  My friend’s got an ’87 Scirocco 16v with all but 200k
miles on it with no problems.  Sorry you don’t like red, it is a popular
color for these cars, but I see a lot of silver 86′s, and several blue
87′s.  If the 85 you’re talking about is the one I’ve seen in the Veedub
classifieds I’d say it looks like a good one.  The lack of A/C could be a
problem though.  Personally, I know I use the hell out of mine here in
PA.  Cracked dash is a pain, but you said yourself looks weren’t too
important to you.  They way you talk sounds like you might as well just
keep looking.  there are plenty of good cars out there, just waiting for
    new owners.
