VW recommends a 5W40, diesel-rated oil. The only oils which meet
those specs are synthetic. Most widely available are Shell Rotella T
synthetic (many Wal-Marts have this one), Chevron Delo 400 synthetic, and
Mobil Delvac 1 (NOT Mobil 1). Castrol makes a special version of their
Syntec in 5W40 which is apparently available only at VW dealers, which is
also supposed to be suitable, but it’s quite a bit more expensive than the
other options.
