Hi I’m trying to find all the ground locations on my 90 Jetta. The car
has been working like crap, and before it finally quit I noticed that
it was surging? At idle the lights would dim and the Alt. would go
under load (belt would start to slip) for a few seconds then it would
come out of it? The Bentley says this is a sign of a bad ground. I
removed and cleaned the grounds starting on the battery post down to
the body then over to the engine block. I then cleaned the one on the
back corner of the head. Now I’m in search of more. I’d like to clean
all possible before I change the fried ECU. I’ve found the ground next
to the fuse panel and the one on the right strut tower. The Bentley
list’s a whole bunch more, but is not specific where they are located.
They say for instance " 15 on cyl. Head" then say " 29 near Cyl.
Head"? How about "38 beside starter lock switch" or "119 & 120 in
headlight wiring harness"?
Can anyone point out where I might find the grounds so I can make sure
they are all clean?
Thanks!

If you "fried" the ECU then the grounds you need to worry about are the ones
from the battery to transmission and battery to body. Personally I would
replace the battery ground cable and start fresh!
