I am in the process of putting an A2 tranny in my ’80 GTI. After
figuring out the shift linkage, I have come across another problem. The
CV joints are the larger ones (10mm larger than the Rabbit ones). The
shafts from the other car, one is the same the other is about 1/4 inch
longer. How can I get this thing hooked up? The inner CV won’t fit on
the old shaft either! I also know the flanges aren’t interchangable
either. One is the spring loaded type, the other requires a puller.
So my car sits there until I can figure this puzzle out! So much for an
easy job for a Sunday…

Sounds like you have 100mm spring loaded flanges and need 90mm ones.
You can get them from ’84-89 cabriolets, 84 GLIs/GTIs, and maybe
’84-86 8V scirrocos. I had to put a set on a 16V transmission in order
to use my existing driveshafts in an ’82 Jetta. But now that I have
a set of 100mm shafts from a ’90 cabriolet, I’ll be switching back. I
would expect that the 100mm CVs would be more robust, considering that
VW switched all models to that type in the late 80′s or early 90′s.
Previously only higher performance models had the 100mm joints.
Anyway, it can be done either with 90mm flanges or 100mm shafts.
BTW, what model did your 100mm shafts come from?

Jason, I helped a friend swap an 86 GTi engine and tranny into a 1980
Rabbit Convertible. If I remember correctly, you will use your old
driveshafts
and swap the inner CV joints from the later shafts onto the inners of your
shafts.
So the idea is you will not have to swap flanges, or driveshafts. You will
be
running the late model inner joints on early style shafts. Hope my info is
correct,
check it out!

Actually I ended up using the shafts out of the 85 GTI. The 100s won’t
fit on the older shafts. The joints are wider as well, so you can’t get
the retaining clip on. I had to undo the ball joint to get the longer
shaft in though.
