Pull of the inside door panels and check the integrety of the plastic
liners. If these have any holes or are not firmly attached replace them
and it should clear up your problem. If they are ok, sorry I’ve been of no
    help!

I discovered that the heaterbox under the dash has a drain
that leads to a hole in the floor. Check that it’s not stopped up.

This is a poor doorframe design problem- I believe.  Both my ’85 Jetta and
’87 Golf turn into in-car swimming pools if they are parked outside in
heavy rains, or parked outside in rainy weather for a few days.  Water
comes in thru the bottom of the doors, trickling down from the outside of
the door windows, into the door frames.

If most VW owners of ’85 – ’94
Golfs/Jettas (was it ’94 they changed the body style ?) were to look under
their carpets after a heavy rain, they’d be surprised to see how wet the
floors really are, or at the amount of rust on the floor under the carpet
and padding .  I had to remove the car seats and carpets after a day of
heavy rains last summer- that’s when I discovered- from all the rust on
the floor- that there’d been a leak for many years. And I wouldn’t have
known about the problem if the carpets weren’t so badly soaked.  (Then I
    checked the 2nd car-same problem)

It’s very easy to miss. (The padding
under the carpet absorbs and incredible amount of water) The only way to
really dry the carpet and padding is to remove the seats out, then the
carpets and finally the padding.  (Not difficult, just very time
consuming) I had to modify the door’s plastic covering to correct the
    problem.

Water can also leak in from the area around the heating
systems’s blower motor located opposite the passenger seat under the dash,
    close to the doorframe.

Anyone have "leakage" problems with the newer
    models ?
