OIL Change

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:48 pm

After how many miles should I get an oil change for a 1983 Scirocco?  I’ve
heard some people say after 8,000 miles, but that seems like a long time.

Thanks!

Razz

I think VW spec is 7500, at least it is for my 89. It used to be 3000 (circa
73).  I used to change mine at 3000 and used 10w30 or 20w50, depending on
season.  Now I change at 5000 and use 5w-50 synthetic oil year round.  I add
slick-50 every 50k miles, because I like the logic of it, even if I can’t
provr it works.   I won’t enter the filter debate, but I think you can’t go
    wrong with a VW filter.

The only thing I’ve realy read about the filter debate is from this list’s FAQ.
For some A2s (my ’88 Jetta included), it’s fairly importnat to use Bosch, VW
and a few other filters which have a valve built-in that others (Fram for
example) do not.  Without this valve, ALL the oil will drain into the pan when
the engine is off.  VW later corrected this problem, I’ve read, by placing this
    valve in the engine itself.

I change every 3000 miles, but don’t use sythetic.

This is an issue that I have to touch on.
I think that I have tryed all sorts of filters and can comment on a few.

Now these are my experiences so they aren’t the bible.  But they took
place one more one car at once so that tends to get a general trend.

       1) Fram:  They are ok and I use them when I can’t get my top choices.
Do cause a little engine noise but not much.

       2) Hastings:  DO NOT BUY THEM.  I bought three when my parts place
didn’t carry my choice filter.  I put them in my father’s ’91 jetta that
never had valve noise and it clanked like crazy.  My girlfriend’s ’86
jetta with worn lifters was terrible with that filter.  My Scirocco w/’86
GLI motor clinked at start up and it had rarely done that.  ONCE AGAIN
DON’T BUY THEM.  My parts guy gave me the hole line about how good they
are.  When I went back I damn near threw it at his head told them they are
terrible and I would go eslewhere to buy my filters if he didn’t get bosch
    again.

       3) Mann/VW:  Never had a problem with them. Highly recommended.

       4) Bosch:  I think that the same company that makes the Mann makes the
Bosch because they look very similar and I really like the Bosch filters.
These are the filters I usually use.  This is the only filter I use on my
Alfa. No valve or engine noise, etc.

        Just my thoughts and experiences…
