I have a ’78 Rabbit that was parked and not started 5 years ago in my
garage. It ran well at that time. I have now drained the tank and added
Fuel injection cleaner and new gas. It starts right away, runs for 1-2
seconds, then dies. If I touch the gas pedal at all, it’ll die sooner, or
won’t start at all. It will always start right up if I wait a minute or
so, then die. If I have given it gas, I’ll have to wait several minutes
before cranking it over, or it will not start.
Please reply with suggestions. Thanks.

Check for missing/broken vacuum lines.. Excessive air entering the
intake upstream of the fuel distributor will cause this exact condition: a
too-lean motor. The 5th injector will squirt enough fuel in to start the
motor, but as soon as it shuts off, the motor dies for lack of fuel. After
that period of time, many of the vacuum lines could have craked, dried up,
or fallen off (or have been removed by someone looking for a line for
another car….

Especially check the air/vacuum hose that runs to the auxilliary air
regulator located on the back the intake manifold (passenger side end).
When the hose comes loose it produces exactly the symptoms you describe.
