Rattling (sounds like jingling change) when I go over a bump…

Ramdon problem here, and I have no idea of its a problem, or if I’m
just nitpicky. lol

Now that the weather is warmer here in NY, I’m driving my ’01 Jetta
GLX (w/ optional sport suspension) with my windows down.  This being
the case, you always hear more noises.

Whenever I go over bumps, such as manhole covers that are not "flush"
with the road, or any other type of bump for that matter, I hear a
"jingling" happening as I go over the bump.  Seems to be coming from
the front weels.  Sort of sounds like someone jingling change in their
pocket.  It stops as soon as I’ve cleared the bumps.

Any idea what’s making that noise?  I’m more curious than anything
else.

you have to give a bit more indication other than "over the front wheels"

have someone else drive your car while you drive next to it listening
closely.  and carefully.  chasing down rattles in the suspension or frame
can be really difficult.  there are about 10,000 parts in a car that wont
rattle when you poke at them but will chatter on if subjected to a bump at
    55 mph.

I don’t know if the newer VW brakes have anti-rattle clips in them (I would
think they do), but I didn’t get one installed correctly on an A2 Golf and I
got a rattling or jingling on every bump.

Might be worth a check, especially if you’ve done any brake work lately.

To rule out anything on the brake setup, simply apply the brakes as
you go over a decent bump and see if the rattle stops.  That might
indicate the rattle clips (which I admittedly don’t know anything
    about in an ’01)

This is what I do. VW’s have been doing this for a long time now.
It’s good to see that somethings haven’t changed. :-)

Yep, that’s it.  I went over a bump, no brakes applied, and I hear the
    jingling.

Went over the same bump, and this time applied brakes, and there was
    no sound.

Is this something "cosmetic", or should I get this checked out ASAP?
I haven’t had any brake work done recently, although I did have the
30,000 checkup 2 months ago.  This has been happening for a while tho,
I just assumed it went away when the winter came, and then I forgot
about it.  Now, that the windows are open again when I’m driving, I
    hear it again.

On my A2 Jettas, this always meant that the rattle clips for the front
brake pads were not installed or just installed improperly.  It’s not
critical to get it fixed unless the noise bothers you enough.  The
next time you’re in for service, have them check it out and hopefully
they won’t charge you for it.

You can try bending them a little, they’re about $8 for a set on my 89
Cabriolet.  I replaced them, and no more jingling. But now, about 16k miles
later, it’s starting to jingle a little again. I think maybe cuz my brake
pads are getting close to worn-out, there’s more room for jostling of the
    pads. That is my theory.

    Theoretically yours,
