Brian,
I have a 96 GTi VR6 and I assume that your Premium Sond System is the same as
the one that came with mine. The answer to the first question is No, there are
no preamp output on this deck (it’s a Clarion in my car). I removed mine and
installed a Kenwood deck from my previous Golf with an amp and two subs in the
hatch. Of course the amp and the subs made a big difference, but the
additional power from the deck alone made the car’s speaker sound fuller (It
has 4X25 Watts). I don’t know how much power they will handle, but the guys
that did the installation for me said that they where impressed with the stock
speakers (after the Kenwood was thrown in there). If you have any question
e-mail me. Good Luck.
Brian (haven’t you seen this name before ?).
I have a 1996 Jetta GLS, with the Premium
Sound System. My question is, can I hook
up an amplifier (i.e. anyone know of hand if
the Premium system has pre-outs/capability
of attaching an amp) to the system. The
stereo has nice sound, I just want a little more
power.
Also, can the factory Premium speakers handle
additional power???
ANy help would be appreciated….thanks.

I’m not sure on the ‘premium’ system..but actually, all stock
VW radios (blaupunk) have a pair of pre-amp outs =] their just not
RCA type.

Yes you can but you need a converter or an amp that can handle speaker
level inputs.

My stock speakers distorted pretty quickly. I’d say they coudn’t even
handle the power of the stock deck. The first upgrade I did was to
replace the front speakers with Infinity separates. It made a huge
difference. I also replace the rear woofers with MTX mid-ranges. The
rear wasn’t a priority since I run a heavy bias to the front for a front
sound stage but it cut out all bass distortion from the rear woofers.

Yes…i had 45w rms going to all four of my stock speakers….i just
recently changed them out. They worked (and still work) out pretty nice
connected to the amps.

Brian,
I have a ’95 Passat with the Premium and wound up replacing it with a unit
out of my old car, a small a/d/s amp, and Boston separates. It was the
Bostons, though, that made all the difference…really. The original
system sounded good with the in-dash CD player, better with the amp and CD
player, but was like night-and-day with the speakers, too. Get with a
competent installer ASAP and audition separates (6.5 inches in the doors,
tweets in the upper doors in back and dash) to see what you like the sound
with and talk deal for a package. You’ll be amazed at how much of a
difference it’ll make.
Good luck and e with questions,
G.
