RE: cost of used tranny – looks like that’s pretty hight to me also – did
that nclude labor?  Suggest you E-mail the Parts Place at –
     partspl…@aol.com
 - and ask them – they sell new, rebuilt, and "used but good" trannys – no
costs listed in their catalog, except to say they have "hundreds" in
stock.

  1. I have lost 5th gear. Now that I have the tranny apart the splines between the
    5th gear and pinion shaft are stripped. The VW dealer wants:

    $160 for the 5th gear
    $280 for the shaft
    $ 80 for a tranny gasket kit

    This sounds a bit high. But I am unable to locate another used tranny (model
    ACH) in my area. Other salvage yards are asking $500 to $600 for one with
    comparable milage.

    My tranny now at 170k and must have been leaking, there was not much oil left
    inside.

    Any advice or help locating a tranny for my 85 diesel jetta would be
    appreciated.

    Thanks to those who responded to my first post.
