The seal on your drivers side door might be allowing water to run into the
car and into the seatbelt holder.  Is the carpet on that side of the car
wet at all after it rains?  Or the water might be coming in through the
sunroof and running along the ceiling and the side of the car down into the
holder, although you’d probably notice a wet seat if that were the case.

My Dasher was leaking fairly heavily for a few weeks (up to two inches
of standing water in the drivers side floor after a heavy rain. :P )  I finally
found the leak (which was the grommet where the hood release cable enters
the engine compartment) by having my brother spray water from a hose onto
various parts of the car while I stayed inside and looked for dripping water.
A similar arrangement might work to find out where your car is leaking.

Good luck,

  1. After a heavy rain, the driver seatbelt when pulled from the
retractor is found wet.  This is on a 87 Golf with sunroof.

    Anyone have any ideas/solution?

    Thanks,
    Steve

  2. I’ve had the identical problem with my 85 Golf.  I’ve narrowed the source
of the water to either a poor roof gutter seal or leakage around the
rubber body trim strip.  I’m more inclined to think it’s the latter.
When my car was under warranty I had problems with leakage on to the
driver’s side floor.  The dealer resealed the rubber trim piece on the
outside of the door. That cured it.

Same here, mine had a clogged sunroof drain tube on that side.  I
cleared it out with a piece of  #10 wire like a pipe cleaner.  Hasn’t
happened since,  but i’m not sure if this was the cause yet.
