Has anyone experienced a faulty seat belt on 87 JETTA GLI? My front passenger
belt will "lock up". This happens infrequently but is a safety problem.
If I have a passenger and it locks up, then it highly restricts their freedom
of movement and is very uncomfortable. If no one is in the belt and it locks
up, then you want to use it you can’t pull the belt out from its retract
position. I filled a DOT complaint and have heard nothing in 6 months.
The freindly dealer will sell me a new mechanism for 200& labor, but I wonder
if this a systematic problem worthy of a freebie fix.

Not a problem, it’s a hyper-sensitive crash detection system.
E-mail me at turnp…@clark.net, and I’ll take a look at
how it may be adjusted. As I recall, it’s a simple gravity/inertial
thingamabob that can be messed with. Also, I think ‘blipping’
the accelerator will unlock it. See, you can invoke it by braking
moderately, and trying to lean forward. The combination of the two
is what sets it off.
