Thinking about buying a 87 Audi 4000 Quattro

Like the subject says, I am looking at buying an 87 Audi 4000 Quattro.
Besides the obvious used car stuff, what is their to look out for in terms
of
reliability? There is 127,000 kms on it and i’ll probably take a look at
it after
the weekend so I would appreciate any response…

Also, what compatibility is there with VW parts and/or what mods are
readily
available?

Thanks,

Dan Berar

There isn’t much you can you do (within reason) to the 5 cylinder to
improve performance. Things to look out for: bad lower arm bushings. You
might be able to see these falling apart, otherwise jack car and
wiggle.Power window regulaters. Roll windows up and dowm. Any binding
noise indicates a future $150 repair. Check all hoses. They are more
expensive than they look. Power steering pumps also go bad.Look for leaks.
Ask nonchalantly what kind of P/S fluid the owner uses.Anything less than
AUDI/VW or Pentosin will indicate future power steering problems. This
fluid, at $15 a bottle is more expensive than good scotch!Audis have great
powertrains. It is the rest of the car that goes to shit and costs a
bundle in parts. You are right in being interested in a quattro;owning a
two wheel drive Audi makes no sense. The only reason I tolerate my 5000
Turbo Quattro is for the way it drives through the snow.

Most of the problems you mention are way more prevalent in the
    5000 series. The 87 4000 is a very good car…

In a recent issue of European Car they featured and Audi with a bore
and stroke kit from Eurospec to take it from 2.2 to 2.6 (or thereabouts).
It was $2000, but it would certainly make a big difference in the lighter
    4000 series…
