Hello again,
As you may remember, I have been chasing a shimmy in my steering
wheel for some time (intermittant @ highway speeds). I finally believe
that I have pinpointed the source. I think it is caused by a failing
inner C.V. joint. The only problem is, I don’t know which one. Is there
any way to identify which on is the culprit, before I take everything
apart. If this can’t be done, what should I look for after I have the
driveaxle out of the car. What is recommended for a replacement, new CV
joint, or rebuilt axle shaft. Thanks for any advice.

Try identifying the defective CV joint by comparing the temperature of
both inside CV joints after driving for a while.

I didn’t see what your first posting was on this, but thought I’d share a
thought with you. Recently having been in the same situation as you, I found
the culprit to be a faulty steering column bearing. As the bearing is pressed
into the ignition housing- it is easy to swap this out. The dealer wanted
110.00, but I found a VAG unit at a parts place for 39.00.You re-use your
current ignition switch. It’s the best 39.00 bucks I ever spent on this car- the
steering wheel is rock solid with ZERO play.
Good Luck-
